On the road and having fun!

We headed the RV west to Las Cruces, NM on May 13th so we could visit with our friends the Topley family.  The occasion was the graduation of one of their daughters from NMSU!  The Hacienda RV Resort has a beautiful view of the Organ mountains and we got a lovely photo of them at sunrise.

Beautiful sunrise!

A couple of days later found us on the road headed NE to join our friends, the Geislers, in Virginia at Grayson Highlands State Park.  We knew we would have several long days to travel, but we were blessed with really good weather so that made it much easier on John and Jane as they drove!  Bosun and Trekkie weren’t too thrilled about the long days they had to spend in their carriers after roaming around in a house, but they managed!

May 19th we pulled into site #73 at the state park.  It was great reuniting with Bob and Judy since we had not seen them since April 2006 when we met up with them in Grand Marais, MN.  Sunday afternoon, we attended the Ramp festival.  Does anybody out there know what a “ramp” is??  There was a ramp-eating contest (that’s a hint, though an obtuse one).

Ouch!!

While here at Grayson Highlands we will spend time doing odd jobs as volunteers as well as having some recreation.  John’s projects will be technical (installing a weather station and emergency generator) and Jane’s will be lo-tech (like picking up trash along the roads)!  Our stay here is pleasant as usual (we have been here now three times…twice with our RV and once staying at the Buchanan Inn at Green Cove).  We rode down the Creeper Trail from White Top to Damascus…just about all of it is downhill, so that makes it easy!  Unfortunately, that same evening we failed to roll up our big awning when we had a pretty good rain at the park and ended up with a broken awning…oops!  Fortunately we had some great neighbors and skilled friends to help John straighten the twisted metal and roll up the canvas so he could secure the awning!  Another expensive lesson!!
That’s all for now from the Canfield’s in beautiful, cool Virginia mountains!
